Alexis Rojas special Art Exhibit June 3 thru 6 at THAI-WOW

“I try to be an illustrator of those stories and poems that I have read. It is a difficult process, which I now try to explain with my art. More than a painter, before anything, I consider myself a reader”

We are proud to present 6 carefully chosen pieces representing the intimate work of Alexis Rojas. Please stop by from 5-6 pm Thursday thru Sunday for a glass of wine while you contemplate the intellectual influence of his pieces inspired by the literary works of Pablo Neruda, Fernando Pessoa, Jorge Luis Borges and Alejandro Zamba, among others. “Their lyrics inspire and I hope that viewers will notice in my paintings that inspiration I found in these authors,” he says.

Alexis Rojas Special Art Exhibit

Alexis Rojas is a self-taught artist born in Huehuetenango, in 1961. He studied Philosophy at the University of San Carlos de Guatemala. He has an academic background in the Art and Philosophy of Europe, Asia, North and Mesoamerica.

“I try to be an illustrator of those stories and poems that I have read. It is a difficult process, which I now try to explain with my art. More than a painter, before anything, I consider myself a reader” he says. In his work he uses mixed techniques in which he combines watercolor, crayon, charcoal and ink.

“I like the feeling of not painting, correctly” I mean that in the process of developing a painting – in the classic sense of painting – the satisfactory and complete finishing of a painting loses relevance. I look for a slight detail, a deformation, that often causes an effect of unfinished, of transit of the image. Temperance, harmony, proportion, eurythmy, are out there in my paintings, but they are like ghosts, perhaps as memories, as that which was once important in the classic experience of configuring images. I never dissociate the theoretical reflection from practical work, and from the rural life in my village, I try to materialize, with the resources I have, some images that, I would like to think, have value by their metaphors.”
