Lead-Up’s goal is to reduce violence by creating peaceful leaders through workshops with horses. The participants are welcomed into a compassionate and non-judgmental environment, far removed from the violence, abuse, addiction and neglect they often experience at home.
Specific objectives are geared to change attitudes and behaviors resulting in the reduction of violence to solve inter-personal conflicts. One young boy saw his mother killed, another young girl was assaulted, and these are just some of the many children and teens who are healing emotional wounds through this program.
Katie Cunningham, founder of Lead-Up explains, “Participants are taught to control body language, breathing and emotions when interacting with horses, and these new skills are then related to their lives.” Upon completing the Lead- Up curriculum they report feeling better about themselves, school work has improved as well as their coping skills.
Monty Roberts, the Horse Whisperer and inspiration for this program understands violence against children first hand. He spent years learning how to break the cycle of violence by creating trusting relationships with horses.
Equine therapy counselor Gabrielle Gardner reports, “It has been clinically documented that just being around horses changes human brainwave patterns. We calm down and become more centered and focused when we are with horses,” he says. “Horses are naturally empathetic. The members of the herd feel what is going on for the other members of the herd.”
