The cover: Self-portrait as a clown
by Igal Permuth

Tarzan López opens this month in La Antigua Guatemala with the photographic work of Mario, Jaime and Igal Permuth. The exhibit takes circus iconography to an entirely new dimension, and yet the images remain recognizable, beloved by world-wide audiences since the 18th century.

Another cultural highlight is the Millennium Orchestra’s performance of Baroque from Two Worlds under the direction of Dieter Lehnhoff and featuring mezzo-soprano Cristina Altamira. The concert is part of the June Festival at the National Theater in Guatemala City. For a host of other events: art, music, theater, film and celebrations, “DateBook” includes 65 listings of activities that will entertain you throughout the month.

In 2005, Hurricane Stan ravaged everything in its path, including vital bridges that spanned the San Francisco River in Panajachel. In A Tale of Two Bridges, we are reminded once again how tragedy foments solutions and how just a few people, with a commitment and vision, can make a huge difference to so many.

In “Real Estate in Guatemala,” a new column inaugurated this month, the question at the top of the list is, “Can foreigners own real estate in Guatemala?” Read on for the answer to this question and other important information pertaining to land ownership, in particular near beaches, rivers and lakes.

Zen-lovers will enjoy The Zen of Stressed Vowels; fans of Martin Leadbitter’s “Hound Heights” will howl at his take on Ninja Kittens; and no doubt there is nothing like an armchair Walk in the Park.

“Commentary” by Sue Patterson, founder of WINGS, is titled Chronic Malnutrition, affecting nearly half of Guatemalan children, particularly those between the ages of six months and two years. Family planning, nutritional information, education, food banks and micro-credit loans all play a part in the solution.

The “Book Alert” for June is The Clothing of Indigenous Women from Sumpango, Guatemala. Originally published in Spanish in 1999, the directors of Yax Te’ books have brought this expanded English edition to fruition, all the while carefully preserving the original content.

For coffee connoisseurs, don’t miss the Cup of Excellence, El Salvador internet auction on June 28. The auction, now in its fifth year, provides a prestigious marketplace for people around the world to bid on quantities of exceptional coffee beans.
