The cover: Antigua Rooftops
by Jordan Banks

This month’s cover photo by Jordan Banks honors the city of La Antigua Guatemala, once known as Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala. Celebrating its patron saint in July and the founding, as the third capital, of Spanish Guatemala, we are pleased to introduce a super-sized map for readers who pick up their Revue in La Antigua.

For our readers everywhere, we’ve added extra pages to accommodate even more articles; this month’s offering includes The Birth of a Telethon and how Fundabiem became a household word. The 2008 Telethon will be broadcast on July 18 and 19. Rock On! brings good news to rock lovers of all ages because the Museo de los Niños in Guatemala City has opened a fascinating and permanent mining/rock exhibit.

Next up is the La Antigua Biodiesel Project that recycles used cooking oil for biodiesel fuel, followed by I Care, We Care for Eye Care spotlighting a massive five-day optical-health fair in Panajachel.

We’re not done yet: the next installment in the La Antigua Ruins series, Awakened Sleeping Beauty focuses on the history and restoration of the Convent of Santa Clara; meanwhile, artist Rosamaría Pascual de Gaméz has finished her latest spectacular mural and you can read all about it in Images of Reality. For Zen of fans, all things must come to an end, the Zen of Q and A is the second-to-the-last in this very popular series.

As we are saddened by the loss, we celebrate the life of Stephanie Riegel, a Revue photo contributor and friend to many, in Border Crossing. Dr. Karmen Guevara debunks the Beauty Myth. And, finally, we have the El Salvador Travel feature, The Comasagua Mountain Range. We hope you enjoy this edition: with 20,000 in print monthly, it is also available worldwide online at www.revuemag.com

The cover: Raúl Figueroa Sarti
by Daniel Chang

The fifth Feria Internacional del Libro (International Book Fair) will be held in Guatemala City from July 25 to August 3. This is such an important event we dedicated the cover photo to the president of the organizing committee of the fair and the founder of F&G Editores, Raúl Figueroa Sarti. It is also our pleasure to present, in Spanish, an interview with him by Esperanza Huerta.

Ruins Reborn recounts the incredible “life” of the Compañía de Jesús in Santiago de los Caballeros, now La Antigua Guatemala, and its illustrious native son Rafael Landívar, author of “Rusticatio Mexicana.”

Water Rights highlights the Ecofiltro, an effective and easy-to-use water filter system. At a cost of Q250, this compact device renders safe and refreshing water at a rate of one to two liters per hour. Imagine the possibilities! Zen of (Not) Knowing tackles two principal verbs ‘saber’ and ‘conocer’ and then there’s ‘ignorar’ ... read on. Next up in the on-going series Real Estate in Guatemala, To Register or Not to Register? brings up some pertinent issues and offers some valuable suggestions. In El Salvador, Going Green features an innovative eco-friendly tourist project at Barra de Santiago. For coffee lovers, Santa Ana regains its ‘Coffee King’ title, winning the honor of producing the best coffee in El Salvador.

DateBook for June includes listings for music, art, photography, theater, conferences, course work and films, plus information on how to vote for ‘Natural Seven Wonders of the World’ ... Lake Atitlán is on the list.
We hope you enjoy this edition: with 20,000 in print monthly, it is also available online at www.revuemag.com.

May flowers, in this case an orchid on the cover brought to us by photographer Holger Tobuschat, and the celebration of Mother’s Day, May 10, seem a perfect match. We salute our moms and yours throughout the magazine with quotations devoted to mothers everywhere.

From May 29 through June 1 the Asociación Guatemalteca de Orquideología will host a show of these gorgeous flowers in La Antigua Guatemala. See DateBook for details. Other highlight activities include a new show at the Museo Ixchel, Evoking the Past: Indigenous Textiles through the Eyes of Painter Alfredo Gálvez Suárez and the celebration of the Month of Museum’s Casa MIMA, located in Guatemala City’s Historical Center. This features the work of 19th century Guatemalan miniaturist Francisco Cabrera and compliments the book presentation, Francisco Cabrera y el arte de la miniatura en el siglo XIX. In addition, other activities this month include art shows, musical concerts, theatrical performances and lectures.

Dawn Run at Hound Heights takes us on an exhilarating morning adventure with Martin Leadbitter; The Zen of... Master Dwight Wayne Coop delves into Mood and Movement, and he reports on the Lake Atitlán Bass Tournament Results; Carlisle Johnson weighs in with Building Locally and Archaeology Around Lake Atitlán; Tamalyn Gutiérrez highlights the Rotary Club of Antigua; Dr. Karmen Guevara explains how to go about Taming the Tiger; and in San Salvador, Lena Johannessen introduces The Finca El Espino Ecological Park.

As always, thank you advertisers, readers, friends and our amazing staff for supporting the efforts of this magazine. Happy trails until next month.

The Zen of But(t) Words starts off this edition with some serious Spanish-language ponderings and the subtle and not-so-subtle humor of Dwight Wayne Coop. This month marks, más o menos, his 50th Zen of … column.
H.M. Consul, Mr. Carl Malin is Her Majesty’s Consul. Heading up the consular section at the British Embassy in Guatemala City, his job goes well beyond the world of diplomacy and protocol.

In an ongoing series, “La Antigua Guatemala’s colonial and post-colonial history” is brought back to life by Joy Houston. Digging into the Past takes us from the Santa Catalina church and cloister where today one of the courtyards is the site of an active archeology dig and study, to the Santa Teresa convent church, now vacant after serving as the municipal jail for the past 60 years.

What do the people of Todos Santos Cuchumantán and American abstract expressionist artist Jackson Pollock have in common? They were photographed by the preeminent photographer Hans Namuth. A show of photos from his book, A Family Album of Mam Indians in the Village of Todos Santos Cuchumatán, 1947-1987 will be inaugurated on April 15 at 7 p.m. at the Ixchel Museum (Museo Ixchel del Traje Indígena) in Guatemala City. Another DateBook highlight is the opening of the exhibition Interiores by Rogelio Barillas (cover art) at La Antigua Galería de Arte in La Antigua.

For additional cultural listings, celebrations and articles of interest, don’t forget to pick up your copy of the Spanish-language magazine Recrearte or visit www.revistarecrearte.com.

Lastly, Dr. Karmen reminds everyone that the road to happiness begins with thoughts and action; for some this means a great cup of coffee in the morning then off to adventures along El Salvador’s Forgotten East Coast.
We would like to dedicate this edition to Dr. William C. Paddock. He will be lovingly remembered by his family, his many friends and countless others whose lives have been improved by his steadfast efforts in agriculture, world hunger and population issues.
